Cold Room Doors & Hardware

Cold room doors carry more load than domestic doors and are opened against a pressure difference, which is why the hardware on them fails faster and matters more. Hinges are chosen by the weight of the leaf per hinge and by whether the door has to lift clear of the frame as it opens; a hinge that sags within a year drags the gasket, breaks the seal line and lets warm air in. The latch is a safety device as much as a closure: anyone inside must be able to get out with the door shut, so the standard fitting is a cam-lift safety latch with an internal release, not a plain handle. Strip curtains keep the cold air in while a trolley passes through, and the important detail there is the low-temperature PVC formulation — ordinary strips stiffen in a freezer and crack at the hanger within a season.
